Pub Trail Group Goes Underground
April’s trail took in some interesting pubs in the Hockley and Sneinton Market areas of Nottingham. After meeting for a pub meal at The Loxley in the city centre, the group headed for Bunkers Hill, a mecca for Ice Hockey and Panthers fans and serving a good selection of real ales. The pub’s name derives from a ‘redoubt’ stormed at great cost to life in the American War of Independence. Next was probably the highlight of our afternoon, the New Castle. The owner kindly arranged a viewing of the historic cellar cut into an ancient sandstone cave and supported by brick vaulted ceilings. The group was given a fascinating insight into how the cellar was restored and reopened by local volunteers and the ongoing work to protect it from flooding from an onsite well. On leaving, some of the group bought home-made wine with the proceeds going to the Stonebridge City Farm. Finally, the group went to The Bath Inn, with its quirky Egyptian exterior and internal theme and with a good selection of real ales.
